Winner: Mike Scott, Local 30

What the judge said: The manly side of CUPE – squared. This is an interesting photo to look at. And the subject makes it even better with a highly public figure within a region – the president – willing to poke a little fun at himself. It may also add to our understanding of what it means to be a brother – as in share the hair.

What the judge said
: The photo shows library staff having some fun and letting their hair down for story time. No doubt this gives a huge thrill to the children who get to enjoy both the stories and the atmosphere that staff create. We can clearly see all five staff and their bedtime outfits.

What the judge said
: This photo makes the most of one of the interesting places that CUPE members work – and the public loves. It shows humour and creativity. It uses the space in an interesting and unusual way. It also shows very graphically the number of people that it takes to provide a service like the fitness centre.

What the judge said
: The photo is active and shows lots of CUPE flags around the cute young activist flying the CUPE 30 flag. Children send a good message about the future.

What the judge said: The photo is a great ‘in the moment’ shot. It is interesting – seeing someone in the middle of having their head shaved. And it shows the commitment of a CUPE member to her students and her community.

Best overall photo
Winner: Michelle Ploughman, CUPE 2157

What the judge said: This photo is relevant to most members of the public and CUPE. It shows CUPE members participating in their community in an event that is very much in the public eye and that is close to the hearts of many Canadians and CUPE members. The photo itself is appealing with everyone looking at the camera, smiling and engaged. It includes an Olympic torch which is also an iconic and interesting item in the photo.
